About the BDO Financial Services Advisory Internship
The Financial Services Advisory Intern will join BDO’s Financial Services Advisory division for a 17-month programme.
The internship provides exposure to a range of advisory work including financial reporting and technology risk and governance and regulatory compliance and client consulting.
It is designed to develop practical business and advisory skills while giving the intern experience supporting client engagements.

Experience Requirements
This is an entry-level internship and BDO states that no prior work experience is required.
Previous vacation work and clerkships or part-time exposure within consulting and audit and legal and financial services or regulatory environments will be recognised.
Academic projects and case competitions or research involving financial analysis and compliance and governance or technology risk are considered advantageous.
Exposure to COBIT and ITIL and ISO 27001-2 or other relevant models is also advantageous.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
The Financial Services Advisory Intern will gain exposure to several areas of financial and technology advisory. Responsibilities include:
- Conducting General Information Technology Controls (GITC) testing and application controls testing
- Analysing information systems data for the accuracy and completeness and timeliness of transaction processing
- Assisting with identifying emerging technology and financial reporting risks affecting financial services clients
- Providing technical assistance to engagement auditors where computer-assisted audit techniques are required
- Supporting the preparation of client reports and management presentations and advisory deliverables
- Assisting with regulatory compliance assessments where relevant to client engagements
- Contributing to risk advisory and business process improvement and governance review projects
- Supporting due diligence and data analysis exercises using tools such as IDEA and Microsoft Excel
- Researching IT risk management and IT governance concepts and industry frameworks
- Developing knowledge and practical capability in data analysis
Financial Services Regulatory Exposure
Where relevant to client engagements the internship may involve compliance assessments relating to South African financial services legislation including:
- Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services requirements
- Financial Intelligence Centre Act requirements
- Financial Sector Conduct Authority requirements
- National Credit Act requirements
- Protection of Personal Information Act requirements
The programme may also provide exposure to recognised IT governance and risk frameworks including COBIT and ITIL and ISO 27001-2.
Technical Requirements
Applicants should be proficient in:
- Microsoft Excel
- Microsoft Word
- Microsoft PowerPoint
Exposure to data analytics tools is considered an advantage.
Candidates must also be willing to learn about compliance and governance advisory concepts relevant to clients in the financial services sector.
