The Gauteng Department of Education is inviting applications for Examination Assistants and Quality Assurers for the 2026 examination period.

Examination Assistants will work at Exams District and Head Offices while Quality Assurers will be based at Marking Centres. The opportunities are open to qualifying registered tertiary students and unemployed people with tertiary qualifications and unemployed graduates.

Who Can Apply?

Applications are open to candidates who meet the educational and employment-status requirements.

Applicants must have Grade 12 / Senior Certificate / National Senior Certificate / National Senior Certificate Vocational.

In addition applicants must fall into one of the following groups:

  • Registered students at tertiary institutions
  • Unemployed people with one or more tertiary qualifications
  • Unemployed graduates

Applicants must have advanced numerical skills with Mathematics or Accounting as a compulsory subject.

Second-year and higher tertiary students will have an advantage.

Examination Assistants

Examination Assistants will work at Exams District and Head Offices where they will support the administration and control of examination scripts.

Examination Assistant Responsibilities

Successful candidates will be responsible for receiving and checking examination scripts and ensuring they are properly controlled and scanned and packed for marking.

Responsibilities include:

  • Receiving and checking examination scripts
  • Controlling and scanning scripts
  • Packing scripts for the appropriate marking venue
  • Checking the number of scripts and marksheets in each batch
  • Identifying and addressing discrepancies
  • Making sure script bags contain two copies of the MP Flow control list
  • Making sure bags are tagged with the correct colour-coded marking venue label
  • Creating marking centre files for scripts being dispatched
  • Assisting with the dispatch of scripts to marking venues
  • Receiving and controlling marked scripts
  • Archiving marked scripts for retrieval when required

Quality Assurers

Quality Assurers will work at Marking Centres and assist with the control and quality assurance of examination scripts and marksheets.

Quality Assurer Responsibilities

Quality Assurers will:

  • Receive and distribute scripts to marking teams
  • Control the number of scripts and marksheets per batch
  • Assist with the distribution and scanning of scripts
  • Check that all questions have been marked
  • Check that marks have been added correctly
  • Verify that marks are correctly transferred to the front cover of each script
  • Check that script totals are correct
  • Verify that totals are correctly transferred to marksheets
  • Ensure discrepancies are addressed by marking teams
  • Ensure necessary amendments are made to scripts and marksheets
  • Reconcile the number of scripts after marking
  • Arrange scripts by subject and paper for indexed archival

Numerical Skills Requirement

Applicants must possess advanced numerical skills.

Mathematics or Accounting must have been taken as a compulsory subject. Candidates should therefore check their academic qualifications carefully before applying.

Previous Examination Experience

Applicants should indicate any previous experience they have in examination administration as an Examination Assistant whether at a marking centre or in an office-based environment.

Ability to Work Under Pressure
